Class Procedures
Dear parents and student,
I’m very excited for the new school year, and anxious to teach your child. I love teaching. This will be my twenty-second year teaching. I’m married and have 7 daughters. I graduated from BYU. I have training for teaching English as a second language, balanced literacy, reading recovery, optional extended day kindergarten (OEK), and balanced math. Each year I learn new things and am excited for another year!
Class times: AM-Mon.-Fri. 9:15-12:00
PM-Tues.-Fri. 12:35-3:30
Monday-Early Out 12:35-2:30
Professional Development Days: October 19th & March 7th the students do NOT attend school on these days.
(See attached district calendar for district schedule)
Homework: Will be given at the beginning of each month, and is to be returned at the end of the month. Your child may work on it at his/her own pace (Do activities daily or save them up and do them at the end of the week, or when you have the time). Please have your child read the sight word pages everyday, and have them read, or read to them 15 minutes per day. Sign your initials in the box on the monthly calendar as soon as your child completes the homework for the day.
Please try to keep it in a safe place and preserve it. If your child misplaces his/her homework folder, you will need to replace it.
Classroom: I run an interactive class and incorporate centers through out the week. Your child will do at least 2 learning activities during centers daily. We will do many phonemic awareness, reading, writing, and hands on math activities.
We will be using the Rigby literacy/Literacy By Design materials; standards based math, My Math (Houghton Mifflin), and the Utah State Core & Content requirements. The students will also have Computers, Music, Art, and P.E.
Behavior: I use a positive reinforcement system and like to reward good behavior. I incorporate a Class Dojo online for behavior as well. This is a point system, and you will receive more information on this soon. I also give the students opportunities to earn table points as a group with incentives awarded on Fridays. If I experience difficulty with your child, I will notify you through notes or phone calls. Sometimes it is necessary for “time-out” to be used for those who need to re-focus. It is sometimes necessary to use behavior plans for students who have difficulty behaving, which includes a daily note home. I will let you know if your child needs this.
I encourage and expect students to behave appropriately. Please discuss the following rules with your child.
1. Be kind
2. Work hard
3. Use inside voice
4. Clean up your messes
5. Be a good listener
6. Raise your hand to speak and wait to be called on
7. Play fair
8. KYFOOTY-Keep Your Hands, Feet, and Other Objects To Yourself.
Playground Rules:
1. No running up the slides.
2. Only one down the slide at a time on pockets only.
3. No throwing or digging in the wood chips.

5. Ball and jump ropes stay on grass area.
6. No jumping on or hanging upside down from the equipment.

Helpers: I would enjoy having classroom helpers. I have several different sign-up sheets for different types of help. (Parties, centers, writing time, room mothers, food donations, copies, making things, switching take-home library books, etc.). I will send a volunteer schedule home in September.
Field trips: There will be 1 field trip. (More information to come on this)
Recess: Kindergarteners will not be eating lunch or snacks at school, except for OEK students. I do allow treats to be brought in for birthdays and when it’ s your child’s turn to bring the sound bag if you wish.
Birthdays: During, or close to your child’s Birthday month, he/she will be assigned a week to be our star student. During that time, you will be asked to send in a poster with pictures of your child, family, pets, activities, vacations, etc. Please include favorites such as foods, colors, and hobbies. Your child will be asked to talk about his/her poster to the class. You may send in a special birthday treat during your child’s star student week. Please no colored frosting on cupcakes or cookies. Other than water, drinks are only allowed on tile areas or outside. All treats brought in must be store bought. School Dist. policy will not allow homemade items to be brought in.
Sound Bag: Your child will bring home a sound bag several times during the school year. Your child should bring the bag to school with 1 item starting with the letter or word ending indicated on the back of the bag for that week. You will be asked to put clues in the bag for your child to tell the class. The other students will then guess what is inside. When you receive the bag, please return it the next day so that the next child can take it. If you don’t wish to participate, please send the bag back to school promptly so others may have their turn. Snacks may be sent in for sound bag if it goes along with the clues. Please nothing that may have peanut traces as we have severe nut allergies in kindergarten.

Please have him/her wear it on his/her backpack to school daily, especially for the first month of school. Our school website is: (saratogashores.alpineschools.org/), and my e-mail is [email protected].
